China's Newly Operational New-type Energy Storage Projects Increased by over 210%
As of the end of the first quarter in 2024, the cumulative installed capacity of constructed and operational new-type energy storage projects nationwide has reached 35.3 GW/77.68 GWh, representing an increase of over 12% compared to the end of 2023 and over 210% compared to the end of the first quarter of 2023.
In the 2024 Government Work Report, "development of new-type energy storage " was first proposed, which the National Energy Administration attaches great importance to, promoting diversified and high-quality development through measures such as advancing technological innovation pilot demonstrations and strengthening the dispatch and application of new-type energy storage.
" New-type energy storage continues to develop rapidly, with installed capacity exceeding 35 GW." Said Bian Guangqi, Deputy Director of the Department of Energy Conservation and Technology Equipment of the National Energy Administration. Among the operational projects, in terms of installed capacity, new-type energy storage power stations are gradually showing a trend towards centralization and large-scale development. Projects with less than 10,000 kW installed capacity account for 6.7% of the total installed capacity, those with 10,000 kW to 100,000 kW account for 38.5%, and those with over 100,000 kW account for 54.8%.
In terms of storage duration, the average storage duration of New-type energy storage projects nationwide is 2.2 hours. Projects with storage durations of less than 2 hours account for 12.9% of the total installed capacity, those with durations of 2 to 4 hours account for 74.6%, and those with over 4 hours account for 12.5%. In terms of regional distribution, the Northwest region, with abundant wind and solar resources, has become the fastest-growing area for new-type energy storage development, accounting for 29.2% of the total installed capacity, followed by the North China region at 25.3%, Central China at 17.5%, Southern China at 15.2%, East China at 12.3%, and Northeast China at 0.5%.
Meanwhile, technological innovation continues to make breakthroughs, and pilot demonstration projects of new-type energy storage are beginning to show results. In early 2024, the National Energy Administration officially released a list of 56 pilot demonstration projects for new-type energy storage in the form of announcements, covering the main technical routes currently applied in engineering applications, including 17 lithium-ion batteries, 11 compressed air energy storage, 8 flow batteries, 8 hybrid energy storage, 3 gravity energy storage, 3 flywheel energy storage, 2 sodium-ion batteries, 2 carbon dioxide energy storage, 1 lead-carbon battery, and 1 liquid air energy storage.
"Since the release of the list of demonstration projects, relevant work has steadily progressed, and some demonstration projects have been successfully connected to the grid, effectively promoting the implementation of new technology applications." Bian Guangqi said. Next, the National Energy Administration will continuously improve the policy system for new-type energy storage, encourage technological innovation, to promote the progress of the new-type energy storage technology, guide the scientific allocation and dispatch of various types of energy storage, promote the regulatory role of new-type energy storage, and support the construction of new energy systems and new power systems.
Bian Guangqi stated that provincial-level energy authorities should strengthen the management of pilot demonstration projects, continuously track the progress of project construction, strictly control construction quality, ensure the safe and orderly implementation of demonstration projects. Increase special policy research and support for demonstration projects, coordinate solutions to problems facing projects, summarize advanced experiences of demonstration projects in a timely manner, ensure that demonstration projects are put into operation on schedule. The units responsible for demonstration projects should increase financial investment to ensure that the demonstration projects are completed on schedule. At the same time, they must strictly implement the application plan, comply with relevant management regulations for new-type energy storage projects, solidly advance project construction, strengthen system operation and maintenance, promptly prepare demonstration project acceptance reports, and regularly report on project construction and operation status through the national new-type energy storage big data platform.
